COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers continue to impress as they took advantage of five errors by Miami East to capture a 6-5 win over the Vikings to improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the TRC.
In the top of the first, Miami East had runners on second and third with nobody out. Tanner Palsgrove threw a runner out at home on a fielders choice, then Tyler Jay forced an infield pop up. Trey Schmelzer then threw out a Viking runner at second to end the inning.
Miami East scored three runs in the second. After an error and a walk, East connected on four straight singles to take a 3-0 lead.
Covington responded in the bottom of the third with two runs. Tyler Jay drove in Kian French and then Tanner Palsgrove singled to score Carson Taylor to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Miami East pushed its lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the fourth, but Covington responded with run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Carson Taylor that score Carter Owens.
Covington held Miami East scoreless in the fifth and then plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning by taking advantage of errors committed by Miami East.
The Buccs started the inning off by loading the bases with one out. Connor Humphrey put down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt and the Viking pitcher overthrew the catcher in an attempts to get a force out, which resulted in both Tanner Palsgrove and Carter Owens scoring. Trey Schmelzer then scored on a wild pitch to give Covington a 6-4 lead.
Miami East battled back by loading the bases and scored on a walk to cut the deficit to 6-5. Fortunately the Buccaneers were able to get out of the jam to preserve a one-point lead.
Covington failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, but Tyler Jay struck out two batters in a row and was able to force the last batter to pop up to Jacob Tipps at second to end the game.
Covington tallied 6 hits and committed 3 errors on the day, while Miami East had 10 hits and five errors.
Tyler Jay picked up the win on the mound as he tossed all seven innings.
Tanner Palsgrove and Carson Taylor both had two hits each, while Grant Blore and Kian French connected on a hit a piece.
Next up for the Buccs is is another huge TRC matchup at Lehman Catholic on Saturday.
