BOTKINS – The Covington Buccaneers were originally scheduled to open the season last Saturday against St. Henry, but unfortunately the weather resulted into the game being cancelled.

So Covington had to wait until Monday to start its season as the Buccaneers traveled to Botkins.

And the Buccs put together a solid performance and took advantage of miscues by Botkins in a 10-3 victory.

Covington loaded the bases in the top of the first and scored a run when Connor Humphrey was hit by a pitch. The Buccs loaded the bases again in the second and two runs were scored when Jacob Tipp was hit by a pitch and Tanner Paslgrove scored on a wild pitch.

The Buccaneers pushed their lead to 4-0 in the third on an RBI double by Tyler Jay that scored Grant Blore.

Botkins was able to get on the board with two runs in the fifth, but Covington plated three runs in the sixth on runs scored by Tanner Palsgrove, Trey Schmelzer and Carter Owens.

After the Trojans scored a run in the bottom half of the sixth, the Buccaneers finished things off with a run by Trey Schmelzer and a two run double by Carter Owens that scored Tyler Jay and Tanner Palsgrove.

Covington tallied 13 hits on the day with Tyler Jay and Tanner Palsgrove leading the way with three hits each. Trey Schmelzer, Jacob Tipp, Carter Owens, Kian French, Grant Blore, Michael Hagan and Carson Taylor all recorded one hit each.

Ashton Skaggs picked up the win on the mound as he allowed just three hits and two runs before turning the game over to Grant Blore with one out left in the fifth. Blore allowed just two hits and one run in picking up the save.
