BRADFORD – The Covington Buccaneers put forth a great effort against rival Bradford on Wednesday in the second round of the tournament, but unfortunately came up short in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat.

Covington managed just three hits against Bradford pitcher Landon Monnin, who struck out 8 batters and walked one. The hits for Covington came from Grant Blore, Tanner Palsgrove and Trey Schmelzer.

Sophomore hurler Aston Skaggs threw a great game as well as he allowed just four hits and one earned run. The other run scored by Bradford came on one of the four errors committed by Covington.

Bradford took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first and the Buccaneers tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Grant Blore, who scored Trey Schmelzer.

Unfortunately the Buccaneers couldn’t take advantage of the momentum as Bradford scored in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

The loss drops the Buccs’ record to 9-13 on the season with one regular season contest that still needs to be played against Riverside.
