COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs volleyball team played well, but suffered a loss to Anna in four sets with the entire contest being extremely close.
The entire game could have been won by either team, but Anna was able to make huge plays in close situations that led to a defeat for Covington.
The Lady Buccs started off with a 25-22 win in the first set that appeared that the tone of the entire game was established for success.
Unfortunately, the second set started off horrible for Covington as Anna built momentum by taking a 15-5 lead. The Lady Buccs battled hard and eventually came within two points late in the set, but Anna was able to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory.
The trend continue in the third set as both teams made runs of momentum in critical situations. The most critical impact in this set was the final stretch where Anna was able to take advantage 2-1 lead with a 25-22 victory.
Covington never relented and pushed its intensity in the fourth set by taking a commanding 23-19 lead. Unfortunately, Anna was able to score five straight points due to some miscues by the Lady Buccs and Covington was forced to put in a timeout to refocus.
The Lady Buccs did refocus and played well, but a bad break on an inch where a ball hit the net and dropped on Covington’s side ended the match with Anna winning 27-25.
Yes, the Lady Buccs lost their first game of the season, but there is a lot of potential for success throughout the entire season. The minor miscues in critical situations will likely be corrected through practices and future games.
Next up the Lady Buccs will face another outstanding team, Brookville, on August 19th at home.
