COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs battled another talented team, Brookville, on the home floor, but came up short in five sets by the scores of 25-27, 25-23, 17-25, 25-19 and 11-15.
In the opening set, Covington claimed a 23-19 lead, but Brookville was able to rebound quickly to take a 25-24 lead late in the set. The Lady Buccs tied the score at 25-25, but Brookville closed out the first set with a 27-25 victory. What hurtt the Lady Buccs the most was the final point scored by Brookville where the hitter’s hand smashed the net.
The Lady Buccs never relented and battled back to tie the match at 1-1 by claiming a 25-23 victory, but Brookville responded once again by taking a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
Many teams would surrender after falling behind after an eight-point loss in a set to put themselves within one set for a defeat, but the Lady Buccs showed more grit by putting together their most impressive performance in the fourth set. Covington’s intensity and execution excelled in a 25-19 victory to tie the match at 2-2 against a very good team.
Covington then built a 6-4 lead in the final set, but Brookville scored fourth straight points to reclaim the momentum. The Lady Buccs couldn’t overcome that sequence and eventually lost 15-11.
Covington (0-2) travels to Newton on Thursday in another non-league game.
